Continuing Your Ongoing Professional Development in the field of Organization Development

Continuing Education is a way to differentiate your résumé from that of someone else with similar qualifications.  It makes a statement to your clients and the business community of your ongoing commitment to the field of Organization Development.  Clients, interested in contracting your professional services, either internally or externally, want highly skilled consultants who can achieve greater organization success.  It’s important for those in the field of OD to stay current with OD practices and tools.  Many professional organizations require ongoing recertification as part of their certification process.  This includes: Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), HRCI, Association for Talent Development (ATD), and International Coaching Federation (ICF).

What are the Requirements?

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) requires those with credentials to earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) within a 3-year recertification period or retake the certification.  Participants complete professional development activities that relate to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge.

HRCI provides continuing education events and activities through providers whom they approve.  Events and activities can range from webinars to seminars and from online courses to conferences.  The goal is to provide HR professionals with continuing education that will help them grow and advance, both in their career and their organization.

Association for Talent Development (ATD) offers a CPLP in Learning and Performance.  The CPLP credential is valid for three years.  Recertification is earned through professional development.  CPLPs must accumulate 60 CPLP recertification points within the three-year recertification period.  30 points are CPLC recertification points link directly to one or more areas of the ATD 2013 competency model.

Some of the recertification categories include: Continuing education, job related activities, educational events, reading books, speaking engagements or conducting training on the topic of Talent Development, research and publishing, leadership roles, and professional memberships.

ICF’s Continuing Professional Development Process (CPD) is consistent with their ethical standards.  As part of a self-regulating industry, International Coaching Federation (ICF) is committed to coaches providing consistent value to their clients.  In order to maintain these professional standards, ICF has redefined its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) position to keep pace with industry expectations and emerging standards.  Ongoing development activities include: Education, Training and Skills Enhancement, Mentor Coaching with an ICF Credential, Coaching Supervision, and Research and Teaching.
